We have a small hillside at the back of our lot. Lee created it to prevent flooding, in case the creek overflows. We wanted something besides weeds to hold the soil, so we sowed the bank with wildflowers. It took a month for them to get large enough to distinguish from weeds, but they are finally doing quite well. They are perennials, so I am hoping they will be hearty enough to reseed and come back every year. This is the perfect setting for a field of wildflowers.
Lee and I could probably go to Europe on the cost of preparing the soil and growing a garden this year - lots of re-planting, due to frost, not to mention the time and energy expended, but somehow, in a bizarre sort of way, that can only be understood by those who love to till the soil, we think it's been worth it. I will post a few photos, like a proud "mother".
This lush mound of green and gold is hiding some cute little, decorative gourds. We've never tried growing them before, but they seem to be indestructible.Next to the gourds is a tall, stately stand of decorative (Indian) corn. I'm thinking the dried ears of colorful corn will look great in a basket with all the gourds.
The eating corn looks a bit puny next to the stalks of Indian corn, but the proof of the puddin' is in the eating. We picked our first ears today, and I can hardly wait for dinner, yum, yum!
I've been watching the watermelon plant carefully. I think we might just be fortunate enough to get one or two of these to maturity before the first frost. This one looks very promising! Oh, and please ignore the weeds. I was going to pull them before snapping the picture, but I kept getting hit by the sprinkler, so I clicked and ran!!!!
It will take several years for our little orchard to produce, but we were lucky enough to plant a Gravenstein apple tree that gave us two hearty apples. Lee sprayed them to keep bugs and worms away, and they look like they are doing fine. We are quite proud ;)
