Bella came for a BBQ and sleepover, and to watch fireworks. After dinner and dessert, she asked if she could have a can of Vienna Sausage (she LOVES Vienna Sausage!). I told her she could have one for a bedtime snack. We were trying to entertain ourselves, waiting for the neighbors to start their Fireworks show, when Bella said, "Is it bedtime yet, so that I can have Vienna Sausage?"

Missionary Interview from Swiss National News

I just wanted to repost a great clip. My friend, Tammy Parker Bell's son Tavan is currently serving a mission in Switzerland. He and his companion were interviewed by Swiss national news recently - it seems the entire world was watching our election results. It is amazing to see the attention the LDS church is receiving worldwide, due to Mitt Romney's run for President. Even though he didn't win, he is very much a winner! Whether or not you understand German, you may enjoy watching this clip. The whole report is VERY positive towards the church. It makes me proud to be a Latter Day Saint!

A Rose for Rosa

On November 2, 2010, our dear mother, Rosa Afton Gold Boam slipped peacefully away, holding the hand of her beloved daughter, Joyce. It is wonderful how the Lord's Tender Mercies can descend upon us like a warm blanket when we are in need. We are never really ready to let go of loved ones and it is so nice that we can "borrow" them back in precious moments. I know that families have an Eternal bond that remains unbroken in death.

It is interesting how the small incidentals keep our minds occupied in the first few days and weeks, to perhaps smooth over these rough times. I have been busily searching for special photos that everyone remembers and want to share them among the family, as well as updating her Book of Remembrance and Journal. In this way, we can all pull together and bring comfort and feel Afton's love flow among us.

Here are a few photos that bring Afton back to our Remembrance:

Harried Mom!

I was running through the grocery store the other day (why do I always do that? poor planning?), when I saw a very harried looking young mother with 4 kids in tow, running faster than me. . .The kids were all whining and begging, "Doritos, mom, please, please, can we buy some Doritos?"
"No," she yelled (a little bit of an over-reaction, I thought, but I don't know the history on that, so I'll keep quiet for a moment, and let this scene play out).
"But why not?" the oldest chimed.
"Because, I hate Doritos, and they are messy!" (end of story? I still thought it was a strange, over-the-top reaction, but I can be theoretical here, because they aren't my kids;)
I continued through the store, but couldn't help pondering that little scene. Okay, I realize that mothers can't always do and say the right thing at the right moment - we are only human, and we often "react" rather than "act", in stressful situations. However, I could think of several ways thr mother could have handled thsy situation (it's so easy to yell instructions from the sideline), but she was busy and distracted. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt here, and say that she most likely does not respond like that all the time.
I did have to permit myself a wry smile though, when in a few moments I passed the little family procession on another aisle, and noted that the mother had a bag of Doritos in her hand! (No, I did not go up to her, and say, "Didn't I just hear you tell your children, 'No Doritos!'???")
I know, I know, she's doing her best -- and goodness knows, I was right there with her a few years ago. But, where is Dr. Spock when you need advice? Moms should be Robots - preprogrammed to always do everything by the book!!!!

Edward Scissorhands and Me!

I was out trimming some bushes yesterday and felt a bit like Edward Scissorhands. Pretty funny image. I like all the plants to have their own space, and when they start to crowd each other, I start chopping! I cut our roses way back this year and Lee was afraid I'd killed them, but they are looking so healthy and producing huge big roses, even though the bushes are smaller - but they will grow. I also whacked our fruit trees drastically. The big mistake I made there was cutting them back in the Fall. I should have waited until Spring, since most fruit grows on last year's wood. I won't do that again, but our trees are still so small, the branches can't support much fruit anyway, so I don't feel too badly.

We have been harvesting strawberries already and it is so fun to have a dish of our homegrown berries! I become more and more aware of the reasons we chose to live in a more rural setting. We have all the convenience of city dwelling, yet the serenity and beauty of "nearly" living on a farm! Yes, it's true, we even hear the occasional rooster crowing, plus lots of cows mooing and horses neighing. It is delightful.
