Quotes to ponder

I was half-listening to a movie on television yesterday, while peeling peaches for peach jam and frozen sliced peaches, when some quotable quotes caught my attention. Knowing I'd likely forget them, if I didn't write them down, I grabbed a towel to wipe the peach juice from my hands, and scribbled the words on a scrap of paper. I think these are worth thinking about, and I plan to ponder them over the next few days: (I didn't use quotation marks, because I'm not sure I got them verbatim, but I think I remembered them well enough to have captured the meaning.)

The only advantage of staying single is that tube of toothpaste lasts twice as long – Bob Hope in Bachelor in Paradise

*This was meant to be a witty remark, for the purpose of convincing the Lana Turner character to accept the Bob Hope character's marriage proposal, but I thought there was still some good advice hidden in there somewhere. I can see how some people would take exception to it, however, but I think studies show that both married men and women are happier, on average, than those who are single.

A man wants to be a woman’s first love. A woman is more discerning; she wants to be a man’s last love. -- Lana Turner in Bachelor in Paradise

*There is a lot of depth to this comment, though I don't suppose it applies to all women and none of the men.

In this world you must be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant. For years I was smart; I recommend pleasant. -- James Stewart in Harvey

*This has been a favorite quote of Lee's and mine for years. I think it is one of the best recommendations ever given, for a happy life.
